It’s the season of giving, and while Florida may be deciding not to participate in the traditional weather associated with this time of year, it feels just like the North Pole around here at the Sulzbacher Center.
"Over the course of orientation, I learned a lot about my fellow National Health Corps members and the National Health Corps Florida Program. The team building activities we participated in gave us the opportunity to share things that we wouldn’t normally share with friends, let alone a group of strangers."
This month, we were fortunate enough to have caught up with former National Health Corps Florida AmeriCorps member Gardenia Duran. She served during the 2014-2015 program year at the Way Free Medical Clinic. In the interview, she shared with us some the ups and downs of her service experience and gave some valuable advice to current and future AmeriCorps members.
"Every time I travel to a school to visit their after school program, I see kids light up at being able to participate in fitness testing and activities; each smile is a reminder of how impactful that my service and the services of the Y are to so many people."
"If you want to help a community improve in health, you must focus on making parts of the whole healthy. Through planning and carrying out the Self Care Health Fair, we learned that each person who our event impacted is an important piece of the whole."
