"I joined NHC Florida because I believed that this program offers me the opportunity to serve a community within my home-state, expand my Public Health knowledge, and also gain real life experience in minimizing health disparities."
Host Site: Northeast Florida Healthy Start CoalitionWhat is your title and role at your host site?
As a Health Educator, I will be providing various educational services for some of Northeast Florida Healthy Start Coalition’s initiatives: nutrition education at The Magnolia Project, opioid prevention for The Azalea Project, healthcare enrollment for Fatherhood, and safe baby, fatherhood, and breastfeeding education with I Am A Healthy Start Employer.
Why did you join the National Health Corps Florida AmeriCorps program?
There were many reasons as to why I had chosen to join the NHC Florida AmeriCorps program. First of all, I wanted to meet other like-minded individuals with the same passion for helping our underserved communities within Jacksonville. Second, I wanted to make a difference within a community in my home state. As a Florida native, I’ve had many privileges in experiencing all the great things that Florida has to offer such as theme parks and beautiful beaches, however, I lacked the experience in facing the challenges that some in this state may deal with. I wanted to face some of these issues head on in order to make a difference so when I had discovered NHC Florida, I knew the match would have been perfect for me!
I am hoping to gain as much as I possibly can from this year of experience! I would like to pursue an MPH after this year, however, I still struggle to hone in on a particular concentration. I hope that with this year of service will provide me with learning experiences about myself and the career opportunities within Public Health.
What are your plans after AmeriCorps service?
I plan on pursuing a Master’s in Public Health.
I hope that I have already completed my Master’s and working within the Public Health field.
