Educational background: Bachelors of Science in Health & Community Wellness

Host Site: Baptist Health, Office of Social Responsibility

What is your title and role at your host site?
As a Health Educator, my service tasks include recruiting and surveying faith-based organizations for Baptist Health’s 8 Weeks to Healthy Living initiative, where I will help prepare the lessons and interventions for the dietitian and exercise specialist. I will save and assist in pre and post BMI screenings of the participants and perform weekly blood pressure checks to ensure I have the most accurate data in their progressions. My role entails strengthening partnerships and networking with other programs that align with the mission and vision of the Office of Social Responsibility. I will also get to facilitate tobacco prevention classes for middle and high school students throughout the community!

Why did you join the National Health Corps Florida AmeriCorps program?
I joined NHC Florida because I believe everyone should be able to be in charge of their health.  I know I can be the bridge that connects the public to knowledge of preventive health and resources. I serve so that the citizens of Jacksonville can obtain an equal opportunity at improving and/or maintaining their health and the health of their families.

What are you hoping to gain from your year of service?
I aspire to get a lucid understanding on socio-ecological health, specifically health behavior. What barriers prevent individuals from seeking medical assistance and what hinders individuals from utilizing the health resources once provided. I hope that the clients I interact with also see me as a role model when it comes to wellness, encouraging them to live healthier lives to the point where they possess intrinsic motivation.

What are your plans after AmeriCorps service?
On my agenda is either taking another year off to serve-learn and professional development or enrolling into school for Public Health.

Where do you envision yourself in 5 years?
My 5 year goal is to be over a chronic disease department, program planning and health coaching. I visualize myself as a part-time professor, teaching social justice and health promotion as well.
