National Health Corps (NHC) AmeriCorps members support healthier communities by serving with local health organizations, hospitals, schools, and non-profit organizations, called “host sites,” to increase access to health education and services. NHC member activities typically focus on one or more of three main areas:
1) addressing the opioid and prescription drug overuse crisis;
2) increasing older adults’ ability to remain in their homes with the same or improved quality of life for as long as possible; and
3) increasing physical activity and improving nutrition with the purpose of reducing obesity and related chronic conditions. Member responsibilities may include a range of activities, including health outreach/education, health screenings, care coordination, and patient navigation. NHC members may not engage in any AmeriCorps prohibited or restricted activities.
Members complete at least 1,700 hours of service during the-service term through a variety of activities. Each NHC host site creates a unique position description that outlines the member’s host site service responsibilities. Members have the opportunity to engage in professional development opportunities at their host sites through supervision, shadowing, and other training. Members also participate in Corps-wide training, group service projects, outside service activities, member-led committees, volunteer engagement activities, and an annual retreat.
