What is your title and role at your host site?

I am serving at the Birmingham Free Clinic as a Patient Care Navigator.

Why did you join AmeriCorps/National Health Corps?

My desire to pursue AmeriCorps/NHC was heavily biased from my initial decision to apply. From my sophomore year to the last semester of my senior year, I was a volunteer at Birmingham with the Connections4Health program. In that role I served as a pseudo-social worker working in collaboration with patients to address their social needs. I applied to NHC to pursue a more intensive and integrated role at Birmingham and to give back to a culture and community that has given me a lot.

What are you hoping to gain from your year of service?

I am hoping, more than anything, to have an impact on the lives of the patients and providers at Birmingham. I hope that in turn, I develop relationships along the way that influence my perspective of health care and shape my eventual practice.

What are your plans after AmeriCorps service?

I am hoping to matriculate into a medical school graduating class of 2023.

Where do you envision yourself in 5 years?

Hopefully, I will have matched into a residency program and will be completing my intern year at an academic hospital. I do not yet know what field of medicine I ultimately want to pursue, but I am currently passionate about palliative and hospice medicine. I hope my experiences in those fields provide a perspective on medicine that I can carry with me into any medical practice. I also hope to continue to find time to volunteer in my community- wherever that may be- and conduct clinical research.
